Rilee, with an insatiable thirst for adventure, ventured into the depths of the abandoned mineshaft. What began as an exploration quickly turned into a nightmare. In a blink of an eye, she plunged 60 feet down the dark, vertical shaft, landing with a splash in a shallow pool of water at the bottom.
Panic undoubtedly gripped Rilee as she surveyed the darkness and the seemingly endless distance above. Her worried family, alerted by the commotion, wasted no time in contacting authorities for help.

El Dorado County Fire Protection District received the frantic call, and firefighters rushed to the scene. The sight that greeted them was sobering – a gaping mineshaft and the knowledge of a beloved pet trapped deep within its confines.
“Our firefighters have responded to dogs that have fallen down into open mine shafts before, but nothing this extensive or serious,” El Dorado County Fire Protection District captain Jacob Poganski shared with The Dodo, highlighting the gravity of the situation.
Undeterred by the challenge, the rescue team devised a plan. A sturdy rope system became their lifeline, allowing a firefighter to descend into the narrow pit. As the rescuer reached the bottom, a sense of relief washed over them – Rilee was alive, though understandably anxious.

Initially nervous, Rilee’s apprehension melted away when she realized the rescuer was there to help. Poganski described her demeanor: “The dog was extremely anxious as the rescuer approached and then was calm and friendly when she realized there was someone there to help her.”
Rilee’s cooperative spirit made the ascent easier. A harness was secured, and slowly, she was winched back to the surface, greeted by the cheers and worried faces of her family.
Back in the warm embrace of her loved ones, Rilee couldn’t contain her joy. “Once the dog emerged from the mine, she happily greeted all of the rescuers individually, as if to say, ‘Thank you!’” Poganski shared, a testament to the profound bond between humans and animals.
A Day of Miracles: A Happy Ending for Rilee
Despite the terrifying ordeal, Rilee emerged from the darkness miraculously unharmed, with only a few minor injuries. “Miracles do happen!” Rilee’s mom, Kimberlee Adams Norwood Mickelson, wrote in a heartfelt Facebook post.
Witnessing Rilee’s happy reunion with her family, the rescue team members couldn’t help but beam with pride. “We all love dogs and hate to see one in distress,” Poganski stated. “We were extremely happy to have a great outcome for Rilee.”
